To Gesture, When Not to Gesture

So, a friend, who only tried the first GW a couple of times, commented on how much he disliked the taunts in the game. He thinks it's a rude thing to do, and likened it to tea-bagging in other games.

So what do you all think? Do you do it often, never, or rarely. When do you think it's appropriate-if ever, and when is it not?

To me, I think it should be reserved for special situations. If you're locked in a fierce one-on-one battle with a foe, and you know only one of you is going to come out alive, then to me it's a celebratory dance, more than an in-your-face disgrace one. Though I'll admit, I have on occasion run over to the defeated rival and danced over their lifeless corpse, so bad on me for that. 😃

I also think it's appropriate if there's another player in the game who has repeated killed you, while you haven't gotten them once. If you managed to finally get a little payback, a one time taunt is fine. But don't start to make it personal. That is a definite no-no!

I don't condone doing it after every single kill. You might have hit a foe with one little bullet, which finished them off because they were already so weak, and that is just a matter of lucky timing, nothing to celebrate. So don't. It just cheapens the taunt.

And definitely don't be stupid enough to do it, if it's likely to get you killed by another opponent, or if there's anything else going on around you, that you should be more focused on--like saving a team mate.

For the most part though, I think the taunt/dances are better used to communicate with your own team. Nothing strengthens a team like acknowledging your other team mates. And that helps make a better game for everyone!

You probably should get off the Internet if you are that soft getting your feelings hurt by a cartoon plant or zombie giving you a nod or dancing.

along with getting off of the internet, you should probably do some self evaluation. if this is truly bothersome to you, you are going to have a hard time at life.

perhaps anger management is where you should spend your free time, not playing video games.

Meh, I do it all the time because I think it adds a bit of humour to vanquishing someone. I particularly like doing it after I've vanquished someone while capturing in Turf Takeover, taunting them in their own garden.

It's really not the same as teabagging and GW has never been a game to take seriously. As has been pointed out, Popcap actually encourages you to taunt victims in GW2 and I would welcome a Taunt Confirmed mode!

Exactly. It is all in fun. It actually feels like it lost something when they give you only two taunts at a time. If you notice the AI taunts you on kills. I laugh every time that happens.

  • I don't really taunt because it just sets me up as a free target but if someone has been taunting me or others i'll taunt back. speaking of which it's very disappointing that all characters only have 5 taunts when in the first game they all had like 10+ taunts

They are taunts, they are ment to be rude and I sometimes use them to provoce people. Why? Because I them can bait these huys into traps or one of my friends playing as chomper to eat them. Furthermore, angry players play less concenteted and focus more in you than the objective. Besides I always taunt Super Commandos, even if there are a Chemist, Toxic Brainz in his Overload and a Z-Mech besides me trying to send me nack to spawn. I used to do it in GW1 to ruin the day of skrubs that abuse one of the most broken characters in PvZ history and I do it now to show them how pathetic they are now that he requires some skill to use. (If you haven't guessed it by now, I hate the Super Commando more than the pre-patch Rose).

That moment when a Soldier goes all the way and jumps in on you, but lands on a Potato Mine: priceless. And so worth a gesture.

When people do stupid things and get instant karma, i taunt them.

Same with the constant rush on the plants spawn in Zomburbia. I could stand on top of a dead body for days and taunt.

  • It's for the enjoyment of the vanquished - and to make a point. I use it only when I take out Electro Brainz (after the Graveyard Variety update) or Rose (before the update).

Of course, you are obligated to gesture if you make it to the top performer screen.
