A CD key and digital download probably have different code ranges. I know a few specifically state they're used for digital purchase.
The other option is dig up $20 and buy the digital download from Origin or Steam.
They have specials on all the time to. Pretty sure I only paid $10. I couldn't even find my old game box.. lol. (way back when. Must have given it to someone)
