Please explain the extra people that appear when respawning in arcade

When you die in an arcade match (at least in the splitscreen coop mode) you see additional people showing up in the slots (not sure if this is the correct terminology) as you prepare to respawn  Do I have anything to do with what class these are,or how many there are?   What are they used for?   Don't understand this.
