HOTAS and Controller Bindings

Product: Star Wars: Squadrons
Platform:Steam-PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? TSINI
Are you playing in VR? No
Which part of the game is the issue happening in? Game Menu
What were you doing when the bug occurred? Step by Step detail is helpful. I’m using an X55 Rhino HOTAS joystick, the game default controls have the roll set to twist and yaw set to side to side movement of the stick. I wanted to swap these around to reflect the gaming controls I use on other games. In game, the twist control works in both directions, but when configuring the controls, the game only detects one direction of twist, so I can only map the right twist to control right yaw, but not the left twist. It is very annoying, and after several hours of wrestling with the basic control settings I still haven’t been able to play this game properly, I’ve only been able to try the training, because the controls are so confusing. The game also will not let me rebind buttons to allow me to layout the buttons in an order that makes sense to me, I have buttons I will not want to use on easy to reach places, but buttons I do want to use bound to awkward to reach places. It complains that I cannot unbind necessary controls, but couldn’t it just highlight these necessary controls as unbound and tell me to bind them before I can save/leave the settings screen, instead of stopping me temporarily Unbind them? When I started the game I had a controller, keyboard/mouse and the HOTAS plugged in, the game seemed to be taking inputs from all three at the same time, so I couldn’t fly with only one, the joystick couldn’t fly the ship because the input kept stopping, and the controller had the same issue, sometimes the ship would just stop turning, I assume because it realised anther input (possibly mouse) was not telling it to turn. I had to disable the mouse input, which solved this issue, but it would be good to be able to switch off (disable) the joystick or the controller depending on which one I wanted to play with.
Where did this issue occur? Please include menu name or in game location. Controls configuration in the settings menu. Specifically it won’t detect both of my twist directions, only right, not left, for use with flight yaw control. Not allowing me to unbind essential controls makes rebinding keys very complicated. Option to disable controller type (mouse, joystick, controller) would also be useful for PCs with multiple controllers, for example to disable joystick input, or disable controller input, so the game isn’t picking up multiple flight controls.
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 2/11/2020 20:00

  • I agree the user experience for mapping controls on PC has not been good.

In my case I have a joystick and I never want to fly the ship using a mouse.  However, the mouse controls can not be unbound at all.  I had hoped to use the mouse for other inputs like looking around or controlling the throttle.  Sadly this doesn't seem to be possible.

My other issue is that one of the joystick inputs must be bound to open the menu.  So I have one of my joystick buttons bound to an in-flight action but the menu action is also bound to that button.  So whenever I press that button, it performs the action I want and also opens the menu.  I am unable to unbind the "Menu" action from the flight stick because "Essential key cannot be left unbound."  It's not essential! I have an escape key.

I wish these arbitrary rules about what must be bound would just not exist. These rules seem like unnecessary complexity and they're getting in my way.
