Re: New assets being downloaded after new launcher patch today?

Oh. I'll try placing them in the Assets folder if BitRaider does not help.

I have switched to BitRaider and it says "Installing 12.48% (512.00KB/s) and in task manager, the process BitRaider Distribution Web Client is using the internet.

It still seems like its going to download the entire 11.6 GB because its going quite slow. Does this mean retrieving the deleted Assets folder was in vain or should I now try placing those two .text files you have attached in the Assets folder after switching back to the non-streaming client?

The only thing you can try is stopping the download copy the files in and restart the launcher

It should convert valid files it recognises

    @dejavu64541

if you have commenced streaming conversion stay with it

the best way to revert back to SSN if you ever want is to copy the entire asset folder somewhere like desktop , alter the line in the client_settings file back to SSN , once the download starts , stop and close the launcher and copy the entire Asset folder back and start the launcher again.

Edit - @Belgorad for info, I have updated directions here to go from Bitraider back to SSN if needed.

  • Hey, is there a particular reason that the txt files you have attached are pre 4.03a patch? Wouldn't I require the txt file post the patch?

  • Oh, I was under the impression that you have to redownload the entire game again if you switch from BR to SSN? Also, suppose I have finished half download of Main Assets 1. Now I do the following:

    1. Copy the Assets folder elsewhere

    2. Make changes in the launcher.settings file from BR to SSN

    3. Once SSN starts download, it makes a new folder called "assets_swtor_main_-1to0"

Placing back the Assets folder has no effect because the way the SSN client tracks progress is using the "assets_swtor_main_-1to0" folder if I'm not wrong?

It was the case that BR to SSN was a new download , especially if the whole assets folder was deleted.

However pasting the assets back after the download process has started is the recommended method.

I have updated the directions here

The folder called "assets_swtor_main_-1to0" is simply a patch folder not a asset folder , the patch folder is deleted on completion of patching.

  • Another question I had is, are the .version files present in the game folder used only by SSN or even by BR? A .version file is created only once a particular asset has finished downloading completely or is it used to track download progress?

Best of my knowledge the .version are compared against the manifest downloaded from manifest.swtor.com and then compared to the assets that exist in the Asset folder based on the .txt versions on what to expect

Bitraider handles things slightly differently if you go into the bitraider folder you will see a txt file called swtor_swtor this is separate to the launcher logs found in the log folder which are common between SSN and BR. this will show what is occurring additional on the BR side.

  • OK.. And does BR detect the files present and download accordingly whenever it is launched? In case it doesn't, I have made it force a verification by deleting the BitRaider folder. Hopefully this will bring about a positive change !

Deleting the Bitraider folder triggers a verification against the manifest and the files that exist

however the official directions for triggering the verification are here  and are slightly different (deleting the bitraider folder is simplest though)

  • A funny thing happened: BR was done 33% and I changed back to SSN and ran the repair tool.

The tool says it's repairing just 1 file. And that 1 file is a 525 MB movie. I thought it overlooked some missing assets so I closed the client and ran it again but even now the repair said "repairing 1 file" and it continues to download that 525 MB movie (the folder is "movies_en_us_0to4")

I hope after that 525 MB movie is done I won't have to download anything else and will be ready to play. What do you think @proxos666 and @Raidell? If there was an issue with the Assets file, the launcher would've detected it right?

Sorry, I didn't have time to check AHQ this weekend. At this point, I'm not entirely sure which files you have downloaded so I can't say what you are missing

Regarding the text files, it's better to not mess with them; when the launcher installs a patch, it will also diff those text files and when you have changed them, the diffing will fail and in the worse case you have to reinstall or repair.

The "assets_swtor_main_-1to0" folder was probably a relic from earlier because AFAIK it is not created by the repair.

When actual size is smaller than size on disk, it means that a file is empty. For example, when the game downloads something, it already creates the files with the correct size so it can fill them in during the download. That's why the folder may show up as 35 GB even though there are only 23 GB on disk. Once the download and installation is over, both sizes will match.

My recommendation would have been to stay with the non-streaming launcher.

Edit: Better wait until the 525 MB movie is repaired completely to be sure; like I wrote earlier, it repairs each part separately, so it's possible that it will have to repair further files once the movies are all repaired.

  • Thanks for your response @Raidell .. And regarding the repair tool. If it says that it just has one movie file to repair, do you think it's true or does the repair utility tend to overlook missing assets at times? Like I said, I just switched from BR to SSN. I also remember you saying that the repair tool scans folders in a particular order. So if it had to find any missing or corrupted files in the Assets folder, it would've done so in the very first scan, correct?

Another mystery is why BR was showing only a progress of 33% whereas SSN repair tool thinks that only a 525 MB movie is to be downloaded. Anyway, I won't argue with success and if what the repair tool says is in fact true, I'm happy but I guess both BR and SSN are not consistent with each other...

Pick one method of patching and let it finish without any further changes

If your back to SSN and it finishes ok this time then all good, in the end a clean install may end up being quicker and simpler if the current install is stuffed.

  • As suspected, after finishing the 525 MB movie file, the SSN repair tool started downloading the 11.6 GB Main Assets file. I wanted to see what impact the completion of the movie file has on the BR progress. Before downloading the movie file, it was 33% and surprisingly even after the movie file finished, it was still 33% (again I have no idea why).

However I think I'll stick with BR till the end and hopefully there'll be no more downloading for a while !

  • Ok so it seems I have downloaded enough to play in the initial planets. BR says the game is ready to play, but it is still downloading more files (about 51% is done). How much additional download is pending and should I start playing or wait?

    @dejavu64541

Up to you if you want to play on the starter planets , but you wont be able to go elsewhere until at 100%

If its at 51% I would imagine there is still a fair bit of download left likely 10GB minimum
