I’m surprised too, because I expected the same thing you did—that after controlling for total GP (via the existing matchmaking algorithm) newer players would have the advantage over older players. That doesn’t bear out in my data. For reference, I’m in the 3M GP range.

I am a veteran 3 year player and was terrified going in to GA that I would be facing a wall of P2P whales. I spent a bit of money when I first played the game but stopped most spending a year or 2 ago when the game became impossible to keep up with. My group seemed incredibly fair both on Characters and GP. My GP was the highest but my arena ranking was the lowest. This first experience has indicated that actually long term players have an advantage! Often my opponents who were clearly newbies/whales: As a general rule, they had a far higher number of Gr 12 toons but my toons had far better mods and my lengthy and in depth knowledge of the game meant I could win on banners even if I "gave up" the board. I posted a strongish defense whilst saving key teams to take out any team I met on defense.Over time I have spread my Zetas out amongst multiple teams as opposed to focusing all my resources on a few key teams.

My point is Newbie whales beware and veterans, have faith! :-)
