They are each 1/9 of a movie. It’s the story of the Skywalker legacy. Jedi actually takes place approximately 3 years after Empire. And Empire’s popularity has more to do with Irvin Kershner than anything else.
Nuts to that. Every movie except Empire has a clear beginning and a clear resolution. You could watch any one of them in a vacuum and say it was a complete movie. Empire has no end, it may as well fade to a placard that says "Three Years Later" and fade in on the opening scene of Return of the Jedi.
Empire's popularity is because 1) It's a very good movie, I'm not knocking it. But also, 2) Because ever since Clerks (and before that, but Clerks was the moment it burst into the wider culture) it became cool to say Empire was your favorite because the other ones are "for kids."
