The conversion only happens at the beginning of the battle, its not happening constantly, that is why that buff doesn't interact with his health.
then why can't he gain protection up after the fact then? By all intensive purposes he should be able to by that logic.

wasn't this a change a while back or something where sith trooper could gain protection up under Nihilus lead and then he couldn't.
Ummm... I didn't know malak couldn't gain protection up,
IIRC the problem was not with SET gaining protection up it was that it was regenerating his protection between battles in GW.
If I recall the set the max protection to some really high negative value (I will go see) which means they would have to get a boat load of protection up for it to start showing (as has already been pointed out protection up increases max protection) Probably did the same thing to malak, which does not sound right to me. IMO malak should be able to gain protection up or bonus protection both are positive status effects and if it don't say no where in the kit than sounds broke to me
