There's no option to leave a journey after you've selected begin journey.
So you're stuck with the journey tags on the characters in the inventory and no way to get rid of them other than completing the journey.

Go to a different character and click begin Journey and it will automatically halt your previous character’s Journey
Yeah. Just make sure you go out to the main menu, then go to Journey Guide, click on the character who you want to switch to, and click Begin/Continue Journey (obviously dependent on whether or not you've already started the Journey in question. I had the same issue for a bit because I was trying to do this from the characters page, and while you can view them, you cannot actually pick a different Journey that way, which is obviously fairly helpful to change so you can see exactly what characters and equipment you will be needing. Hope that helps!
Unless you mean there is no way to go back to having no Journey selected at all, in which case, yeah, you're right. I suggest just picking the character whose Journey you intend to next pursue, even if it won't be for quite awhile, and leaving it at that. It's the best you'll be able to do - they haven't instituted any kind of "Take a Break from Journeys" button as of yet :P
