You do know that R2-D2 first appears in episode 4 a new hope and is a main character in that entire trilogy right?
I think R2 and yoda are the only characters who are in all 3 trilogies (so far). In that regard I'm glad they just tagged him republic, rebel, and resistance to cover his role in all the trilogies rather than create 3 separate physically identical R2s with different abilities and tags.
