@SoniaSimmer, that could be it, I've got an integrated graphics card and it doesn't seem to be very strong. The other specs are fine (tri-core processor at 3.3Ghz and 6GB RAM).
Oddly enough, it runs Sims 3 quite happily xD
I've been playing with my Sims 2 family and I haven't had any crashes in game at all. Thanks again for helping me :)
