Creating a large city / megalopolis in The Sims 2 Legacy?

Hello everyone,

I'm completely captivated by The Sims 2, which seems to be the only game in the series that offers total creative freedom. I create my own maps (using SimCity 4), arranging the roads however I want, then placing lots, houses, and buildings as I please, without any limits. You can even control the seasons to create different climates (for example, a city with snow all year round), you can build 15-story buildings, and so on.
This game is incredibly rich (and I'm not just saying that to advertise 😄).

The possibilities for creation and expansion seem endless, especially since the Sims 2 Legacy remaster, where I find the loading times much faster than before.

So, my question is: how far can the game go in terms of capabilities? How many buildings can you build in a neighborhood before the game crashes (or slows down significantly)? Does the amount of RAM on a PC really impact the game's performance?

Faced with these questions, I'm trying to embark on a large-scale project: creating a megalopolis, the biggest one possible. I've created a map with many narrow roads to fit as many buildings as possible. I've already created about twenty 10-story apartment buildings, which I'll then duplicate to create the largest city I can. I'm also using some "decorative buildings" to give the city a very modern look.

So far, with my twenty or so buildings, everything is running smoothly; I haven't experienced any noticeable slowdowns.

But to best achieve my goal, I have a question:
I currently own two PCs: one with 16 GB of RAM, and the other with 32 GB of RAM. For now, I've installed The Sims 2 Legacy (via Steam) on my computer with 16 GB of RAM. But I'm hesitant to reinstall it on my 32GB PC.

Will upgrading from 16GB to 32GB of RAM improve the game's performance for building a large city?

I've already looked for answers on forums, and I have to say the opinions seem divided. Some say a powerful PC will improve the gaming experience, while others say that The Sims 2 Legacy has its own internal limit (which is much lower), so upgrading from 16GB to 32GB of RAM won't make a difference.

What's your opinion on this? To build the largest possible megalopolis, is it worthwhile installing the game on a PC with 32GB of RAM, or is it pointless?

Has anyone tried building a huge city this way in the Sims 2 Legacy, on a gaming PC? What was the result? Were you able to achieve a satisfactory result, or did the game crash quickly? Do you have any tips to share on how to achieve this?

Thank you so much! Have a wonderful evening everyone! 🙂

(I sorry, English is not my native language. I initially placed this message in the French forum, but the French side is not active... so I'm trying to post it here also. Thank you so much!)

I agree with you! You're absolutely right. I also think it's great that EA re-released Sims 2. And I also think it's a shame that everything is so predetermined in Sims 4, but it's still a great game and I'm already looking forward to the next Sims generation. :D

You're welcome! I hope Sims 2 runs better on your second PC!

    Have a great weekend!

I live out in the country in real life, but in Sims cities are my favorite places to live.

  • Ok thank you for the information LadyGray01

So I will try to create different buildings with different numbers of floors. And if I see there is crashing I will play with smaller buildings.

If you got some cities with a lot of buildings without limit issues, that's good news 🙂

Thank you so much! I can't wait to build my entire city ❤️

  • I've got some cities with a lot of buildings in them and haven't encountered a problem with a limit on that yet.

Building heights beyond 6 floors can cause problems though. A 6th floor can be made without even cheating. Just place a dormer on the 5th floor, start building, then delete it. But beyond that, especially with higher numbers, you may get slow loading, jumping, even crashing. It's nearly impossible to get the camera to move right to furnish anything above 8-9 floors and you can really only look at the whole building in neighborhood mode. I think that's the only reason some people even build them is neighborhood decoration and they don't intend to go into the lot.

  • Thank you so much Dustlex  for your reply! It helps me a lot!

So I'm going to install it on my second PC. The gaming experience will be amazing.

Honestly, I think The Sims 2 is the best game in the whole series. I'm so captivated by the idea of being able to create everything myself, to be able to create my own worlds entirely. I feel like I have total creative freedom. And even the neighborhood system, where neighborhoods can contain sub-neighborhoods, is absolutely brilliant. It allows you to create worlds, and within each world, create different interconnected cities. It's absolutely incredible!

Meanwhile, I've been looking into The Sims 4, and I was surprised to see that everything is locked down: you can't create your own cities; the number of lots and apartment buildings is very limited, etc. Everything seems small and limited in The Sims 4. If EA were to evolve the game into a Sims 4 2.0 (or even a Sims 5), I hope they would give it more creative freedom in that regard (just like in The Sims 2). And even Inzoi (which is newer and more modern) doesn't seem to be heading in that direction either. Video games in the 2020s are too restrictive, locked into commercial strategies.

Anyway, I'm really grateful to EA for developing this remaster of The Sims 2. It's truly fantastic. Technically, I think it's one of the best video games of all time.

So for now, I'm staying focused on this game, and I can't wait to install it on my second PC. And I'm going to run it at full settings; I'll see how far it can go.

Thank you so much for your advice! 🙂

    Have a great evening!

    HeyJeremyBlueStar,

    You're welcome!

The second PC is slightly better than the first. I would actually try installing Sims 2 on it if you're currently experiencing problems. Maybe the game runs better there. I've definitely read that Sims 2 has Problems with AMD graphics card.

As mentioned, since the game can only utilize 4 GB of RAM, it does not matter whether you have 16GB or 32GB installed. Therefore, this will not affect loading time. More important is an SSD, which is probably installed in both devices.

  • Thank you so much for your reply!

Here is the information for my two computers. (Sorry, my level about computers is bad, but here's the information I can give you):

    - My computer where The Sims 2 Legacy is currently installed:
GPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS Mobile Processor 3.1GHz (8 cores, 16 Threads) (to 4.5 Ghz)
The graphics card : AMD Radeon RX 7600S
    Ram: 16 GB
    System: Microsoft Windows 11

    - My second computer, on which I'm hesitant to reinstall The Sims 2 Legacy:
    GPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13650HX (2.60 GHz)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
    Ram: 32 GB
    System: Microsoft Windows 11

Based on your previous answer, it doesn't seem worthwhile to switch to my other computer with 32GB of RAM. However, I'll let you check the specifications. Please let me know if there might be a performance improvement or not.

I really love The Sims 2. And I would love to make it the best experience possible. This game is so incredible, I really want to see how far it can go in terms of the number of buildings, the size of the cities that can be created, etc.

    I would have another question:
If I don't create a big city, but instead I create a lot of sub-neighborhoods into my main neighborhood, will the game's loading time still be limited to 4GB of RAM (so it will be the same loading time from 16GB to 32GB of my computer's RAM), or will the computer's 32GB allow for faster loading?
Idem, if I create a lot of neighborhoods (main-neighborhoods) into my game, will the computer's 32GB of RAM allow for faster game loading when starting the game?

    Thank you so much! 🙂
