The Sims 2 Legacy keeps crashing after 1-2 hours of playing

I bought the game a week or two ago and was also getting this issue, since some EA update last night the game is now completely unplayable, if I select a family to play as the game crashes on the loading screen.  Deleting the cache files does nothing to help, neither does turning off shadows, I've been scouring the forum for ages and can't find a solution that works :(
