Does the exploration have to be gameplay. I wonder whether a building project might be of interest. Putting your sim family into a world you have created is something I am trying at the moment. The world building bit is slow and frustrating but there is a great sense of satisfaction. Other things on my list is running a resort for which I might build another small world.
