The horror!!! Sims 3 saves gone!!!

Hey everyone. I just needed to rant about this a little. So this weekend I had a system error with my computer that would not allow me to boot it at all. Lucky for me I still had my recovery disks and the disks allowed me to complete a system backup before resetting the whole system back to factory setting. Once I looked at the external hard drive that I saved the backup files on I saw that everything was saved: my music, pictures, documents...but my sims 3 and sims 4 files had half of the information missing. This included my saves. I am not sure why my saves were not backed up at all when I did the system backup. I would have thought everything could be savable.

I do have many of the sims 3 and sims 4 saves backed up on another USB drive, but these files are from last year (oops I've been forgetting to back them up manually recently.) So I can at least use those files and just replay them to get to where each family were. I do not play the sims every single day so I don't think I would be missing a ton of information with these older files. But I did just recently create a all brand new family and it sucks that I never got a chance to save them. Again, lucky for me I had only started to play that family about two weeks before the system error so I'm still in a terrible situation. I just have to try and remember all of the customization's I made to the sims, the house I purchased, and a few of the buildings in the town.

So the rule for the day: always manually back up your save files periodically. A system backup may not always back up everything on your computer.

Anyone else have something like this happen to them?

    Hi :)

Aw- that's so sad and frustrating when it happens. :(
I've had crashed and misplaced (lost) game stuff.

I just backed up a few worlds now that you mentioned it so thanks. :cookie:
  • I’m so sorry that happened to you! I always copy saves to an external drive manually plus upload my family to MediaFire every now and then. After losing all our holiday pictures one year in a similar way you did, so I learned the hard way...

    I'll second using an EHD.

I lost the whole lot in a laptop fire. The nice techies in the computer repair shop were able to recover some of the files including my saved sims file. Have you still got your saved sims file? If you have you might be able to recover the sims which make up your new household.

    Good Luck :)
  • That is a bummer. I had a hard drive fail, but, luckily I got a bit of warning with funny little beeps and when I googled the noise I found out my hard drive was failing. I had enough time to get my family pictures in an external before it shut down, but the puter guys were able to extract some of my stuff that I didn't get saved. Yes, I do back up on an external, but, not as often as I should. :)
  • After reading this thread yesterday I uploaded some of my latest saves to my Google Drive. You can never be too careful. Sometimes even having one external drive isn't enough. I found that out after one of my early computers failed on me and I had to get the experts to retrieve my data.

That's sad losing so much hard work with those save files. :(

I've been lucky to not lose anything. I used to keep everything uploaded to a personal Mediafire account but now keep backups on a flash drive and external hard drive. I waited for sales and grabbed both cheap.
  • I've been in a habit of backing things up and it saved me once when my Mod update went wrong and I had to replace my Sims 3 folder.I also back things up to external hard drives as well because I hate to lose everyything.

@KaruBlack I'm sorry you lost your saves. I don't think the system backup is designed to backup any user data - just system files.
  • I'm sorry all your progress was lost. I remember this happening to me a long time ago while I was playing The Sims 2. I lost everything including a Bachelor Challenge story for my simpage that I was in the middle of editing. I had backups but they weren't current enough to get back my progress. I still didn't learn my lesson, though. I don't even bother with backups anymore because I never remember to update them frequently enough to be useful. Oh well, fresh starts aren't all that bad.
