Thinking of purchasing entire game on Steam

I’m sitting at the purchase screen thinking about buying the entire Sims 3 series for the purpose of getting it all really cheap and getting away from origin.

My question to you guys is:
What are the steps involved to get this installed properly? I have a tiny bit of stuff I got from the store eight years ago but it’s not enough for me to worry about if I can’t get it back. I have a GeForce GTX 1060 video card which did give me problems with TS2 but I got help for that and the game looks beautiful. I’m wondering if there’s anything I need to know before I make this purchase.

  • I really can't help you on the technical side, but maybe more info on RAM, space available on your system, SSD versus hard drive space, would be helpful... and, your computer processor, ie. I have an i7-7700 @3.60GHz.
Personally, I bought the discs and avoid Origin entirely.

On the store content. After installing your game, you should only have to update the store patch, which is separate from the game patches. Then, you should be able to redownload and install your store content.

My vid card has 6gb RAM. I have half a terabyte free on my system, regular hard drive.

One thing I'm curious about is if/how do I register these EPs and SP without getting pulled back into Origin again? And do I install them in a certain order? EDIT: Apparently it installs it all at once. And I'll search the forum about this on how do I "update the store patch". What store patch?

Another EDIT: So I installed everything via Steam. It told me I would have to register the game before playing it and suggested that I copy down the registration codes. After that, I hit "play" to play and it came up with my old save. Note that I had uninstalled TS3 in Origin and ran a registry cleaner before the new installation. So I'm wondering if all is well. I haven't registered anything yet (don't know how). It did bug me to "login" to Origin but I'm wondering if that will update my game and tie me to them again...
  • That's a bug of some kind, we all got that registration warning the first time we ran a TS3 Steam install. Players on the Steam forums have indicated that a few other games do this too, it's meaningless.

However, if you register your newly purchased base game and WA in particular on the TS3 Store site using the codes provided, you still get 1,000 store points for each one of the two (unfortunately not for the other packs). It's a now ancient offer that is still being honored.

Origin cannot affect your TS3 game. Steam has it installed in an entirely different way/place in Program Files (x86). What you could do, though you would have to arrange a mess like this for yourself, is reinstall the entire Origin version of the game on top of the Steam version. There would be no reason to do that and in fact that would likely break the ability to play at all, so this is just in theory really.

Thanks for that info! Good to know.

How would I go about registering those two in order to get the 1k points? And Can I use the points without Origin snagging me again and if so, how? Along with this, When the TS3 launcher suggests I login, if I do so there, am I still safe?
  • Your current game install is Steam specific and Patch 1.67. It has nothing to do with Origin. The only role Origin could possibly play now is if you should need to use it as a purchasing agent for store points or EA Store worlds that are sold that way and then downloaded from the TS3 store site after purchase. There is nothing that Origin itself can provide that would affect your current game install.

This is the old TS3 site where the store is attached: https://www.thesims3.com

Code registration, this is for product registration not to install anything, would be under My Pages (your page) and then Register a Game.

Many of us play offline (not logged in) at the Launcher and in-game levels. If you log in on the Launcher or in-game, you will have the option of using the online features of the game, such as they are. Those would include earning badges, the in-game store shopping experience (many of us hate this and it drags down performance in Build/Buy), sending in-game gifts to other players, and Simporting if you have Showtime. Oh, and I suppose little things like saving Scrapbook memories up to the My Page site or wherever they land, and using the Exchange. Many of us just don't care about these features very much.
