It's a mix between Rabbithole & Self-employment.
It's not a popular opinion but I like rabbitholes. Happy middle ground... They can still look great standing as a shell to fill out a town without the computer having to load the inside and it's easier to manage a busy household. I do prefer my sims to disappear into a building instead of the street.
Self-employment is great leaving more free time and more money. I've just started using custom self-employed career mods to expand what the game+packs already offer.
Professions are fun and I do occasionally play them but they can easily become a chore and boring so I treat them like World Adventures tomb raiding... Every other generation or longer depending on the sim.
