downloading update to Sims 3 base game

Installed The Sims 3 base game on a new pc.  Selected the update option for the latest patch.  For some reason the patch is not "taking" in the game.  Every time I open the game launcher I'm told I need to update to the latest version.  How can I get t his game to accept/recognize/run the patch file?   Patch is 1020063817 if that makes any difference.

I'm running Windows 8 on a Dell with i3 processor.
