- Yes, you must buy and install the game. :D

Some laptops don't have a dedicated graphics card, but when playing this game on a laptop, you will definitely want a laptop that does. A lot of new graphics cards have been released since Sims 3 was last updated, so you may need to update your graphicsrules.sgr and graphicscards.sgr files in order for the game to properly use your dedicated graphics card.
Next, I recommend that you use nraas mods to help the game run more smoothly, especially since you're planning on playing on a laptop. Mods such as nraas errortrap, overwatch, etc. Nraas mastercontroller is also a must if you want to have increased control over your game and sims.
I hope this can help, there are a lot of tutorials already existing online which can help you figure out exactly how to update these files. A google search should bring some of them up.
Good luck and happy simming!
