My mermaid sim tried to swim with her guitar and now it's in the middle of the ocean, floating on the surface like the guitar is Jesus Christ himself. My sim can't retrieve it, and it's outside of the lot, so I can't retrieve it either. I've already tried setashead.
Any suggestions on how to retrieve or just get rid of this thing?
Have you tried to reset the guitar itself?

Any chance of your Mermaid swimming near the guitar and command her to 'put in inventory'?
