Just write down their names, find them in the household manager and delete them.
You can also use testingcheats, then shift-click on them and add them to the family. Then delete them from there.
Okay so I didn't exactly do the experiment you mentioned, but I instead started a fresh save and created a pair of siblings to go to Foxbury institute and live in one of the dorms. In my previously mentioned saves, all my uni students went to UBrite and lived in the dorms.
Not long after beginning, the game freezes and then eventually MCCC kicks out a new exception. I open it and it says the same thing: Roommate Get Hype issues again. So I don't really know if I can stop it from happening if the issue spawns in a fresh save in another university.

I feel like I used to see the interaction carry out successfully because I remember seeing my sims get the action "Get Hype" when around roommates, but that was a while ago.
So I don't quite know what went wrong whenever it decided this interaction is not going to work anymore.
