This is happening to me too. It's not an issue of the trashcan being inaccessible. Last night I was playing and they were able to use the trash. I opened up the game without any changes to the lot and now it's telling me I have no trash can on the lot.

This can happen if the indoor trashcan is full and you do not have one of the big outdoor trashcans or it is inaccessible.

Click on the indoor trashcan and see if you can empty it. You can also buy the Nano trashcan which never needs emptying.

First problem with this is that the trashcan was not full. I know because I had the sims empty it before I closed my game. This has also happened when I've playtested builds for the first time and there literally is no trash to empty. 

Second problem is that in all of these cases the big outdoor trashcans are present and they are accessible. I don't place them with MOO.

Third problem is that if the outdoor trashcan works one day but not the next. I should not have to rebuy an item every time I open my game.

Did this bug ever get sorted as to how to fix the problem? I have the same/similar issue and I've been cruising the posts trying to find a solution. 

 - Yes Ive replaced, renewed trash cans. I'v been playing Sims 4 for years and I know how to build and play household and how to set up trash cans. 

 - Yes, I've restarted game

 - yes I've tried leaving the active household and returning. 

 - No I do not have any mods or CC

 - yes I'm playing most updated game version. 

It would be nice if fixes were posted on these forums so those of us with the same bugs can try the posted solutions. Instead I'm spending an hour going through pages of posts that are just more questions instead of answers.

Is it an ongoing problem or just occasional? Because I frequently get “trash can required” or even “trash can or sink required” but then just need to wait 30 seconds and try again and it will work. Might have something to do with what’s in the Sims queue, possibly more frequent if the Sim is on stairs? But not an ongoing consistent problem.

A while back I remember there was a bug where trash cans just stopped working altogether on some lots. Seemed to happen more often for me on places with a lot of pet hair. I managed to clear one lot by buying the indoor trash can that eats/recycles trash and then manually dragging and dropping every bit of trash and every empty plate I could find into it. Once the lot had no trash on it at all, Sims were able to use the trash normally again.
