sims not spawning when returning to home lot

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? after you play the game for about 4 hours, have a sim travel to a different lot spend some time there and return...It doesn't happen right away with a fresh sims household. I've been trying to isolate the variables to figure out what prompts the bug, but the main thing that seems to be a factor is time spent playing. Saving frequently doesn't prevent it. It seems to happen slightly more often with tiny home residences, but I have had it happen with regular residential lots as well.
What happens when the bug occurs? The sims doesn't spawn when you go back to their home lot. their little thumbnail is greyed out like they are away from the lot, but you can't click on that and have them return home. You can't access their phone to tell them to leave and return again. If you try to reset the sim in the cheat console, it says that the sim isn't found. If you to the main menu and try to reload the same game, it doesn't load...it just hangs on the loading screen. sometimes it will let you restore an earlier save, but not always. It happens with mods disabled, and I have tried to repair the game, but it didn't fix it.
What do you expect to see? I expect to see my sim load when we return to the home lot.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.

The lot traits and setting I usually play with are: off the grid, simple living, geothermal, and natural well. I have played each lot trait individually, but none of them seem to be the trigger for the glitch. It often happens the fifth or sixth time I have my sim travel to another lot and back home. I have had it happen with different community and home lots in different neighbourhoods.
