How do you build a platform inside a building?

Can anyone that knows how please help me understand how to build a platform inside a building? I want to make a stage life effect to place instruments on, like the piano and can't seem to get it right...

I have done this before but I had some lighting issues as a result. Because the foundation level is considered "outside", the interior lighting never looks quite right, you also get shadows bleed in from outside. I suppose it depends on whether you'll care about something like that longer-term.
