Feature Request: Cosmetic Doors

So basically, doors that won't open.

Instead of creating a bunch of new cosmetic items, I'd suggest an option to toggle the door's functionality in Build Mode. A feature that would be completely unrelated to lot ownership. That way we could design public lots with sections that are vital for the design, but where the public doesn't actually have access. For example, a shop with shopkeeper's apartment upstairs or a temple with inner sanctum. Or a whole block of authentic-looking apartment buildings surrounding a public venue.

  • @Irezawa you can already lock all doors for other Sims just by clicking on each interior or exterior door, but it's done in game rather than build mode.

I regularly create retail lots with an apartment or trailer for the store owner and I lock the doors for the household or one Sim. For a door that you want to remain locked for all Sims just click on it and lock it for everyone.

  • @simsplayer818 Uhm, I don't think that's what they meant, judging by "unrelated to ownership". I often build stuff that I don't intend to (or even could) actually own, like parks, nightclubs and so on. @Irezawa, here's what you can do:

    1. Set the lot as Residential.
    2. Move in a household. If the lot is too expensive, cheat some money OR travel to a neighboring lot, click the lot that has the doors you want to lock and "move in household from gallery". This bypasses any money requirements.
    3. As a member of the household, lock all doors you want. If the lot is intended to be a business, use "lock for everyone but employees" instead of "lock for everyone".
    4. Once you're done, move out the household and set the lot as what it's supposed to be.

Doors you locked are still locked and will remain so even if you delete the household you used, so you don't even have to populate your world with unwanted Sims.

But yeah, I'd very much like to be able to set a door as "non-functional" in build mode so I could skip all this hassle, so a vote from me.

@Tohtori_DengeleI understood what they were meaning but the feature does exist in live mode so it is possible but yes a Sim needs to set it first. I get your way of addressing it differs.
A console player can't cheat money without losing console trophies so that option unfortunately is ruled out for anyone playing on console. But also a retail lot needs to be owned first anyway. Prices need to be set, staff hired and items set for sale. So if it was a retail lot, there would have to be a Sim there anyway initially. They could sell it afterwards. I often do that. Lock for everyone but employees doesn't work for me on retail lots either unfortunately, sorry. I'm not sure if that's meant to be for Maids/Butlers for example but retail workers just stand there so that may be useful feedback for that to be changed at some point.

In private rooms/flats/attached houses I lock for everyone but the household or if it's a solo Sim I lock for everyone but them. Almost all of my retail lots have a dwelling attached. I've got one which is a family weekend beach house with an attached store and some flats too.
For a house where nobody lives, it's locked to anyone else. Even if you arrive at a lot you can't go inside.
But perhaps the feedback to add it in build mode will be taken on board for players that would like the feature to set it in build mode if it's possible to do so.

  • @Irezawa That's a great game play idea! I've known of hotels, storage units, and even grocery stores where the owner/manager live on property.
