The Sims 4: Drift & Dwell – Houseboats, Ocean Travel, and Surfing!

Hey fellow Simmers (and EA team if you're reading ),

I've been dreaming up an expansion that brings freedom, adventure, and ocean life into The Sims 4 in a whole new way. What if we could build houseboats, explore open seas, surf tropical waves, and live like true drifters? I’d like to share a full concept I call:

The Sims 4: Drift & Dwell
A life on the tides—houseboats, surfing, ocean travel, and soul-searching freedom.

Here’s the breakdown of what this expansion could offer—and how it could work in-game.

Title: The Sims 4: Drift & Dwell
Type: Expansion Pack
Theme: Oceanic freedom, functional houseboats, open sea travel, surfing, and coastal living
Inspired By: Sulani vibes, pirate coves, minimalist seafarers, and the thrill of life adrift

Imagine your Sim building their own floating home, sailing across shimmering waters, discovering hidden islands, catching waves, and embracing a free-spirited ocean lifestyle. From tugboats to pirate ships, from beach bums to treasure hunters—this expansion has space for every seafarer’s story.

Core Features
Buildable, Functional Houseboats

New lot type: Houseboat

Must be built on waterfront lots (New world + Sulani & Tartosa access)

Sizes range from tugboats to pirate ships and everything in between

Entire foundation must touch water to activate boat mechanics

New “Float Foundation” type allows builds to bob and drift on water

Add a Captain’s Control Panel to your boat to “Set Sail”

Once activated, you transition to the Ocean Zone (open sea travel)

Ocean Travel & Exploration

After launching, the boat shifts to a dynamic ocean map where you can:

Anchor near hidden islands

Visit fishing coves, floating markets, pirate wrecks

Dive for treasure

Explore mysterious ocean shrines

Return to the main world docks at any time

Boat state is saved—come back to exactly where you left off!

Surfing Skill

New 10-level Surfing skill

Use custom boards (Bioluminescent, Eco-Crafted, Vintage, Pirate)

Join surf competitions, show off tricks, or wipe out spectacularly

Works in Sulani & Ocean Zone surf breaks

New World: Tidebreaker Island

An all-waterfront map designed for sea-focused gameplay

Buildable water lots of various sizes, enabling diverse boat styles

Secret islets, tidepools, and a deep-sea shrine for lore unlocks

Home base for drift life: tiny villages, traveling traders, ocean legends

Lifestyle Enhancements

Coolers with functioning alcohol (Basemental compatible)

Functional hammocks: Nap, lounge, or woohoo

New traits:

Drifter – Loves travel, gets bored staying still

Shore Soul – Gains buffs from ocean, immune to sunburn

Sea Watcher – Can predict weather/tide changes and surf conditions

Gameplay Hooks & Extras

Why Drift & Dwell?

Players are hungry for a more immersive, flexible lifestyle in The Sims 4. With years of mods and wishlists behind them, they’re ready to drift beyond static lots and venture into deeper, more dynamic living.

This pack offers what many have longed for:

Living off the grid without giving up creativity

A mobile home experience that’s stylish, cozy, and narratively rich

Relaxed, aesthetic gameplay for storytellers, builders, and challenge-lovers alike

Actual exploration that feels organic and player-driven — not just a rabbit hole

Whether players want to play as pirates, peaceful drifters, competitive surfers, or coastal minimalists, this pack expands what life simulation can look like.

How It Could Work

Lot & World Integration:

A new world (e.g. Tidebreaker) with all water-adjacent lots

Lots vary in water coverage, determining what size boat can be built:

Small areas: Tugboats

Mid-size: Sailboats, Yachts

Large-scale: Pirate Ships, Cruise-Converted Houses

Buildable structures must touch water entirely to register as a boat

Floating Foundation Tool:

A new foundation type that allows the structure to float and sway

Can only be placed on water lots

Optional movement animations when “Set Sail” is activated

Transition to Open Sea:

Clicking the Captain’s Panel triggers a transition animation (like loading into Batuu or Granite Falls)

Loads a new ocean map, where the houseboat is in the center

Players can now sail to islands, interact with other boats, and live ocean-based lives

Return to Land:

The boat returns to its designated dock lot on the original map

All inventory and household state are preserved

Compatibility:

Plays well with existing traits, off-grid systems, Eco Lifestyle upgrades, and Basemental mods

Expands upon Island Living’s foundation in a fresh and intuitive way
