Do you think renaming the sims 4 folder as sims 4 (old) and redownloading might fix it? I've been saving that as a last resort as I'd rather not have to do that.

Definitely understandable that you wouldn't want to go through that whole process for nothing!
Given the steps you've already mentioned trying however, I don't believe that would necessarily change anything else in this situation either.
