There's two posts from other members of workarounds they've done that helped them with this:

3. Buying it as Retail fixes the Generic issue but you will not be able to change the lot type while you own it (similarly how you can't change the lot type of a residential house with sims actively living on it)

4. Sell the lot on behalf of your household. This will then enable the lot type changing.

Could you give those steps a go and see if they help you change your lot type?

I wanted to put a residence on the bathhouse lot on Mt K. My problem that I put the house on the lot, but it change to generic. I can't move a family in because it is not a residential lot. I need to change this to a residential lot, but I can't figure out how. Thank you

There s no option to change the lot from generic to residential so I can't move anyone in. I can only have other households visit it. It was originally a bathhouse and it will not convert to residential.

I tried it myself.
As you said, there is no choice in lot type.

I tried installing a house with the original residential type, but once I went into world management and could see the residental display, when I went into Build/Buy mode, it was changed to the lounge type that was installed just prior to the type. When I downloaded the Sutefani Onsen Bathhouse with having the lot type "Onsen Bathhouse" to other lot, the lot type options were displayed for that lot and could be changed.
It is thought that this lot is the only one with a special setting.
