It sounds like you exit without saving the game. After you have created a household and placed it in the world you will be able to click on the Manage world icon beside the Build Icon.
I saved each time but the issue seems to have resolved. I did 2 things and I am not sure which did the trick. I removed my documents folder from icloud so I could is not backing it up now. I also moved the saved games folder to my desk top as well as my documents folder. It was either an issue with my saved games folder or with icloud backing the games up.
