A Question . . . May I Have a Show of Hands, Please?

I have, again, reached a crossroads in my Cantrell Chronicles Reset story.  I've noticed there is a bit of a fall off among those who once were reading.  Currently, my mindset is simply to sum up their future ending with, and they all Lived Happily Ever After, and call it a day.

If you wish to read more of their daily adventures, I will need that show of hands. This was my grown daughter's suggestion when I told her my mindset. As I have stated before, a Writer is nothing without Readers. Yes, I'm writing primarily to keep up my writer's skills, but still knowing if what I'm writing is interesting and worth the read, also helps.

So, please let me know. Depending on how many likes this thread receives will help me decide. I shall always treasure those who have been reading and responding no matter what.

Please, and thank you, in advance.

  • Of course I cannot know how it is for anyone else.

But now when you asked , I would guess , that the thing you have restarted it so many times , has  caused that some readers interest might have faded away a little.

I  know new packs and all in past make the desire to start over, but maybe start new things with next generation?

And if bugs or corruption causes restart, setup the new save to start from the point where all left?

I myself am very curious to see how Erik's children and perhaps grandchildren will do in their life 😊

  • Hello GalacticGal. I've not logged in here to reply to messages in quite a while, but I do check in regularly for stories, patch updates, and some general threads as well. I feel your frustration, which is why I thought I'd actually log in to reply to your question. So, here goes.

First, I love your passion and dedication to your Cantrell Chronicles. I also quite enjoy the sci-fi element you've worked into it. I would encourage you to keep writing out of the joy of telling the stories you want to tell. The readers will come.

Second, the readers. And this "fall off" you've noted. So, have you noticed such a fall off before? Could it just be less people frequenting the site? Maybe the time of year for various activities? Maybe it's just a natural dip and things will bounce back?

The only other thing I would add for your consideration is my own experience with your story. I have been with the sims since TS2 and have gobbled up many stories throughout the decade plus I've been simming, so it isn't crazy that I discovered your story quite a while ago. What first drew me in to your Cantrell Chronicles was the newness of following your sims through the story you told. And as mentioned above, I've very much enjoyed the crossover Star Trek elements and thought that it added some originality to your story. In fact, I recall reading quite a few favorable comments to this sci-fi/Star Trek crossover aspect, with some wanting even more of it.... So you definitely can get the readers' interest!

Now, getting back to your question...you've done a "reset" a while ago, and the story's been set back a bit. Then there was a pause (all for good reason mind you).... After having been around these forums and the stories here, I've gotten the impression that your Cantrell Chronicles is a story you want to tell a very particular way. Even to the point of starting over if things don't play out the way you want them in the game. And that's no different to some of the other stories I've read. But, I have thought it'd be easier on you if you simply took the screen shots and continued his story without having to play through every detail in the game itself. Does that make sense? I mean, don't get me wrong, I have one family I typically sim with and I do play every detail out the way I want it to play out! 100%! But, if I were telling their story, I would find it easier to have two saved games for my sim family -- one save for my own play-through (where I can be as exacting as possible in playing out their storylines), and a second save for the story I share with others (this save isn't about playing things through -- that's what your first/personal save is for, this save is for setting up scenes and taking the pictures for your story so you can focus on the story itself and keep that momentum going).

In marrying both styles in one save, I just sometimes think it complicates things. You know, to have to have certain things played out that we, as readers, never see, but you, as the simmer, are unable to unsee.

Granted, if you are simply chronicling a sim family as you play, without the need to force game outcomes along a pre-determined course (marrying one certain woman, becoming a musician and one that sweeps the awards, etc.), then you could just take screen shots as you play the game and write up the story later. But, when you need to direct the game to effect an outcome you desire, you may need to exit out of the game (fires anyone? emotional deaths?) or restart, etc. etc. because the game may always throw a curve ball at your sims.

Many stories do just that -- they embrace all the curve balls even if it takes the characters where the author would never willingly choose to go. So, those curve balls can really lend to some deeper and surprising storylines!

BUT if you as the writer don't want those curve balls messing with your story, then maybe the two save files would work for you and for us (as the readers)? Because what we would see here would be Eric's story told the way you want it to be told and the gameplay itself wouldn't matter in that case (though you can enjoy every bit of it in your personal play-through).

I hope my shared thoughts here only serve to encourage you to continue writing and sharing your chronicles of one of your favorite sims. I can't speak for anyone else, but I would enjoy seeing how the rest of Eric's story goes.

Wow, thank you so much. Yes, for the most part this story is game driven.  I have to confess that Brianna's story is already captured in my three-volume Star Trek Fanfiction mini-series. (Already published online.) I'm writing about Erik, because he was Brianna's favorite brother (and remember she does have four) and I wanted to give him more time. That's why when he finally found the one to marry, I let his children be born according to how the game randomizes things.

As for repeating things, yes, I do have a tendency to do that --- mostly to allow me to capture pictures that didn't get captured. I almost always tell the story, sometimes without pictures. Other times, the rollback was necessary because an honest glitch in the game caused a death I hadn't anticipated.  Recently, his baby twins went 'missing'. But I agree, trudging through what's already been played is dreary, to say the least.

Curve balls! I love them. They create story fodder where once there was none.  Joey joining the newlyweds in the hot tub was a curve ball. It did take longer for me to incorporate what was going on, due to the fact this happened before Birthday Week. I just opted to share the picture. I had to realize just what the youth was up to, you know?

I so very appreciate your words. I am feeling encouraged. Yesterday was a bit of a low day for me.  I have to confess one time I rolled back recently due to the fact that Sunday in the game blew right by me. 😮 I was like, how did I miss that? Yeah, he was nominated and I flat out forgot to send him. Face/palm.

Other than that, I do my best to just keep moving the game forward. I will keep your words handy, though for reference, should I go down this unhappy road again. Thank you so very much.

  • Thank you for weighing in! I have restarted way too many times. Guilty as charged. With this latest EP, though instead of taking the family all the way back to Erk's infancy on Vulcan, I decided to pick things up where they were called back to Earth. The unfortunate 'reset' was named thusly, because in the beginning, I had to fight to get the three generations ahead of Joseph, so I could establish them in the cemetery.  Somehow, this changed the chapters written, and since I could find no mechanism to re-order the chapters, let's say, I had to start a new thread. This was done with permission of the Powers That Be. I wasn't even able to create a new thread for Part Two, which we are clearly in these days.

Many a time, I did my best to rollback the saves to as near a time as I could to where things went wonky. It just isn't always possible, I have discovered.  And, yes, I need to find a fresher viewpoint to add to this storyline.  Or it could be the draw of summer being what it is, is all this fall-off is about.  Ooh, maybe some of Erik's allies won't be so cooperative?  I'm just spit-balling.

At any rate, I do have to find a better way to invest in Erik's children. Sad thing is I get a little bored when I leave Erik's household. He's the Sim I'm interested in.  I tried to have his twin daughters move out and run their own apartment complex, quite awhile back, when that pack come out, but again, things took a turn story wise that didn't keep my own interest. (Even then I was moving into a royal theme.) I do think I am where I'm supposed to be, it's just getting through the governmental changeover . . . Again, thanks for responding!

    Hi GalacticGal,

I'm a lurker in WHIYGT thread. I'm also a lurker in Creative Corner. You might've seen me 'like' a few of your posts there or in Creative Corner.

I'm always on the look out for stories to sink my teeth into. I've come across many on WHIYGT that I'd love to follow along more closely. Yours was one I was particularly excited to find because you have a dedicated thread for yours.

The one thing I find difficult though, is navigation. I don't feel confident commenting because the thread is currently at chapter 45, and from where I began, I'm missing 40-ish chapters worth of context. So I tend to lurk and leave silent likes instead.

This is also how I sometimes lose track of stories on WHIYGT. If I had a busy period and come back after a while, it's difficult to work out where or how to get back into a story.

Would you consider adding some kind of navigational section to the main thread? I think it could make it much easier for new readers to jump in and for existing readers to find their place again after a break. I could reorder the posts from oldest to newest, but if I stopped reading for awhile, I'd have to do that again and then search through the thread to find the chapter I left off at. It can mean quite a few clicks just to get back to where I was.

If your chapters naturally break into arcs, even something as simple as an arc/chapter index could help a lot. Or summaries can help, such as "New here? Read this then start from Chapter 30(link here)!" might give newer readers an easier entry point without expecting them to work through the entire backlog first.

I'm only suggesting it because I'm actually one of those people who wants to read your story, but I easily lose my place (even irl, I'm hopeless with directions). I suspect there may be other lurkers in the same boat. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your wonderful suggestions. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're suggesting I insert a link that can be clicked to take the person to the beginning, or to a summary page of all that's gone on so far.  I need that, myself, just to find the end reply to add the next chapter. Sheesh. I so miss the other forums; I can't tell you.  There it was so very easy to just scroll down to where you left off. I wanted to start a new thread for part two, but either I was prevented from doing so, or there was a glitch currently on the forum both times I tried to. If I could afford a BlogSpot (or other such site) I would move to that in a heartbeat.

I most certainly with give your suggestion consideration. And thank you for reading!

Just thought you would like to know I was able to grab the link from chapter two, but all you need do, is hit the show more link on the chapter above. Thanks again for the clue.  I also put a message to that end over in WHIYGT? thread.

I hear you. I write on Wordpress which is free, but I find the ads a little intrusive.
