I'm sorry for your loss. Something similar happened to me 18 months ago when I had laptop problems. I moved a bunch of files over to Dropbox, including my save games, to back them up before resetting my laptop. I stupidly forgot to check everything had moved across ok and had the time to upload. Needless to say I lost all my sims stuff. It definitely hurts but now I have new sims that I love even more than the one's I lost, hopefully you will too.
