I realized that some of the counters I've been referring to as "island" counters are actually "peninsula" counters.
Here is an example of a peninsula:

It attaches to the regular counters and doesn't have to be against a wall. There could be double-sided peninsulas that have cabinets on both sides, or ones similar to islands with an overhang.
I also previously described a type of layout for less than 90 degree angles. Here is a crappy mockup I did using screencaps from a friend's computer.

Of course, that would also be nice with curved countertop over it or with curved fronts to the cabinets.
