Not sure if you can have your sim book a celebrity cleanse when you opt-out, but that gets rid of all quirks if I remember correctly. Though it doesn't help with your story! I've never opted out, but I would assume that everything would either go bye-bye or stay the same? And there is always a cheat to remove the quirk if you wanted to at some point. Not sure if that one is a testingcheats on shift click cheat or a type it in the box cheat, but I'm pretty sure there is one somewhere. And there's the Quirk B Gone potion too.
