Feedback on Turn-ons and Turn-offs in Lovestruck

Hi.

So the turn-ons and turn-offs (further referred to as TOTO) have been revealed. There are of course some parts I'm happy about and some parts I'm... feeling needs improvement.

For those unaware, there are 3 types of TOTOs:

  1. Physical - These are based on sim's appearance, thus these are attraction points your sim starts off with.
  2. Personality - These are based on sim's traits and skills and affect attraction as soon as they are learned.
  3. Romance Styles - These affect what your sim has to do to raise or lower the Romantic Satisfaction.

Right now, there are 6 categories. These how they go into those 3 types:

  • Physical includes Hair Color, Outfit Color, and Fashion
  • Personality includes Way of Life and Characteristics
  • Romance Styles includes, well, interactions.

Here are feedback on each of the types. I'll use the spoiler tag to make the post easier to navigate:

Physical TOTO Feedback

Now that's a really underwhelming category.

Fashion and Hair Color is OK, but Outfit Color in my opinion is so minor that I feel like there could be something better.

I'll take The Sims 2 for example. In there, the physical TOTOs would be:

  • Hair colors (Which is represented)
  • Swimwear, Underwear, Formalwear
  • Glasses
  • Hats
  • Jewelry (Accessories)
  • Makeup
  • Fit, Fat (which I get why these weren't included)
  • Cologne
  • Stink
  • Life state (Vampires, Zombies, Servos, Werewolves, Plantsims, Witches)

So, based on that, I'd suggest these categories:

  • Hair (Bald, Short hair, Medium hair, Long hair, Updo hair, Body hair)
  • Makeup & Accessories (Glasses, Lips etc)
  • Clothing (Skirts, Blouses etc)
  • Life States (Aliens?, Vampires, Mermaids, Spellcasters, Servos, Werewolves)
  • Smell (I'll explain further)

Smell is an interesting category and I envision there 9 options (so that the layout makes my brain feel good). Besides stink, I'd suggest perfumes or colognes or whatever, and suggest to have different types of them, like Rose, Citrus, Moonpetal etc... I'm not knowledgeable in this world, so please suggest your own here.

Personality TOTO Feedback

This is mostly fine. After all, these are things that come into play when sims get to know to each other. After all, it all may start off unattractive because of yellow clothing, but as sims get to know each other, they may become very attracted to each other. I have some suggestions though.

The Way of Life category could also take career tracks into account. Here are my suggestions how it would look like:

  • Academic could include Education, Doctor, Scientist, Gardener (Botanist branch), and Conservationist (Marine Biologist branch) careers.
  • Arts & Crafts could include Entertainer (Musician branch), Freelancer Artist/Writer/Photographer/Crafter, Painter, Style Influencer, Writer, Critic, and Interior Decorator careers.
  • Culinary could include Culinary and Critic (Food Critic branch) careers.
  • Drink Making could include Culinary career.
  • Engineering could include Freelance Programmer, Scientist, Engineer, and Civil Designer careers.
  • Health & Sports could include Astronaut, Athlete, Doctor, and Military careers.
  • Interpersonal could include Business, Secret Agent, Tech Guru (Start-up Entrepreneur Branch), Writer (Journalist branch), Detective, Critic, Politician, Conservationist (Environmental Manager branch), Law, Salaryperson, and Romantic Consultant careers.
  • Media & Technology could include Tech Guru and Social Media careers.
  • Nature could include Gardener and Conservationist careers.
  • Performer could include Entertainer, Social Media, and Actor careers.
  • Sense of Humor could include Entertainment career.

In addition, I feel like Occultist could also be one of the options. Likes those who have Medium or Vampire Lore skill or has high occult rank.

Characteristics I get. These are based on traits sims can discover. I'd still like to add Mysterious characteristic that includes Erratic trait and occult statuses.

Romance Styles TODOs I have little to give feedback on. Well, besides some selections like public woohoo, private woohoo and kissing.

So yeah, again, it's an interesting system I'd like to see expanded further in the future. It could have many customization options to make the game more interesting after all.

    • Age (For YA/A/E only) :
      • Young Adult : For example Gladys Morse is attracted by Young Adult Male sims
      • Adult
      • Elder
    • Walk Style : For example Creepy Walk Style could be a Turn Off.
    • Physical Appearance :
      • Wrinkles (Face and Eye Details)
      • Facial Scars (Forehead, Cheeks, Eye and Mouth Details)
      • Hair
        • Bald
        • Short
        • Medium
        • Long
      • Facial Hair
        • Beard
        • Goatee
        • Mustache
      • Earrings
      • Piercing (Eyebrows and Nose)
      • Makeup
      • Tattoo
      • Body Hair
    • Clothing Preference :
      • Sims wearing Dress, Skirt and Feminine Clothing
      • Sims wearing Pants, Shorts and Masculine Clothing
    • Character Values (GP05 Parenthood) :
      • Conflict Resolution
      • Emotional Control
      • Empathy
      • Manners
      • Responsibility
    • Reputation (EP06 Get Famous) :
      • Positive
      • Negative

      Nice suggestions. I especially like the walk styles one. Didn't even think of that.

      Scars are also for body. Yet the main reason why I excluded scars is because top surgery and c-section scars exist.

      Character values are interesting idea also, but I excluded them as they are classified as reward traits, thus are unlearnable. But skills are turn-ons and turn-offs, so perhaps.

        Body Scars are less a TOTO, IRL it's not really a factor.

        Face Scars could mean that the sims is a criminal or just hotheaded for example.

    I don't get why weight is so controversial, tbh. I get not wanting to encourage or reinforce discrimination against body types, but that's just assuming the worst out of preferences and taking the choice away from players, in a game that's single-player. It can't be used to harass other players. And even if we assume the worst, I don't see how judging others by weight is more appropriate than judging someone by wealth, or if they're already in a relationship (with the more obvious implications being that a sim wants to be a gold digger or homewrecker.)

    I'd hope that the sims team would update TOTOs for the stuff they're missing, but I doubt they will. Likes and Dislikes are still missing things, and they've been in the game for three years. Things rarely get touched up on once the pack is out, even though they really should be.

      Agreed.

      Remember that physical TOTOs are initial attraction and personality TOTOs begin to have an affect when sims get to know to each other. So let's suppose there are weight TOTOs and sim is turned off by high weight. They might begin off as unattracted, but if they get to know to each other and the other sim hits personality turn ons, the sim may actually become attracted to that sim instead.

      Plus, TOTOs can be changed at any time just like likes and dislikes.

      Removing options can remove the freedom to storytelling. Not to mention only PC/MAC players can turn to mods to add more.
      I hope they do come back to it, but yeah, my experience agrees that they rarely update existing systems from other packs.

    What about occult lifestates?! 

    The system looks quite nice. But as someone who has a supernatural sim in just about every household, I don't understand why this part is ignored.

      That's in the suggestion part...

      Perhaps my worries were misplaced and we do get an occult turn-on/turn-off. But for now, it's safe to assume there isn't any as the early access and developer livestream only shows the base game and Lovestruck.

        I noticed it in the suggestion part. I totally agree and mentioned it mainly because that's the one suggestion I had before reading your list. It's the one I want the most. 

         

        Let's hope it will be there when all packs are installed.

    My feedback is that whenever I read TOTO my head plays Africa by TOTO and its not nice

      Ah yes... Yet it's the best alternative to always writing Turn-Ons & Turn-Offs.

      Now that you mentioned it, I'm starting to make that connection too. Why did you do this? I was having a great time...
      Ah well, at least I have a cat...

    I get that they are separate features, but it makes no sense for a sim who likes red to be turned off by someone wearing red clothes.  Also clothes colour is such an ephemeral thing to base attraction on, if they decide to skinny deep, the attraction will be gone entirely if that was the only turn on.

      That might make sims more interesting though. One example I've wrote here before is that let's suppose the sim has fond memories with the color red in their childhood, thus they like the color. However, due to that connection, they view anyone wearing it as immature and they'd like a more mature partner.

      Second thing I totally agree with. If changing clothing or taking these off altogether erases attraction, then what's the point. Some sims are more attractive in lounges than in gyms simply because their party wear contains green. So yeah, my feedback is mostly "expand on physical attraction, please".

        I think that if you like a certain colour then you would try to incorporate it into your everyday life. If red puts you in a good mood and gives you positive energy then you are not going to shun it on the basis that it's best suited for children. If you think that red is not good enough for you to wear it then it means you don't actually like it, regardless of the fond memories you have from childhood.

    I think the physical TOTOs are an afterthought. I mean, why stop at hair colour? We have Fashion and Colour included in likes and Dislikes, so not sure why they added those here as well, especially since they are so easily changeable, they are not a permanent type feature of the sims.

      Characteristics are also a recycled one. All of them except 1 (Romance Enthusiast) are in the Characteristic likes and dislikes. Though they did add 2 new ones. Just like they added 1 new fashion to the fashion category.

      The only truly new categories are Hair Color, Way of Life, and Romance Styles.

    I think it's too soon to complain that occult types haven't been included in TOTOs. We've only seen Lovestruck paired with the base game. Still I agree that outfit color doesn't make much sense. I suppose people who are into Goth fashion might like black, but Goth style as a fashion choice would cover that. Maybe white for people who fall in love with brides at weddings?

      Also we already have color preferences in likes and dislikes. If I really hate yellow (I don't know why I always come back to yellow as an example, I quite like yellow), then I'm not going to like it on my date either. At the same time a yellow sweater is not going to make me write someone off completely either.

        I get the opposite way around. The blue may remind someone of their childhood so much that they don't like seeing their date wear blue.

        But what reason there is to dislike a color but be turned on by it?

        Hmm...

        Good question...

        Their ex owned a lot of yellow things and the sim still sort of hasn't let go of them I guess. I don't know anything about romance to be honest...

      That is true. Perhaps players that don't own occult packs won't get that category. But for now, just in case. If it turns out that there is occult category, I will edit the post.

      Do we know for sure that occults are not included? The early reviews are base game + new pack only, so they may not show cross pack functions.

    Very well, I finally got it done. The spoilers glitched out as I first wanted to make Romance Styles a spoiler too, but it copied Personality spoiler. Then it deleted half of Physical feedback and so on. Frustrating, but I got it done. Give it a look.

    turns ons and turn offs are base a persons red and green flags they even said that in the gameplay trailer then girl pretended she got a emergency call, she said good thing babe that was red flag after red flag

      Not to be *that* person, but shouldn't TOTOs be called red and green flags then? I do not mean any disrespect in asking this question, just asking because there really is a difference. TOTOs are what first attracts you to another person. Red flags are those things that pop up after the fact (and, some, maybe not even long after you meet that person).

      As a side note here, I have literally never seen anyone and thought, "WOW! That color of shirt that person is wearing is a TOTO!" I just don't quite get that. Colors are already likes/dislikes, which makes some sense. But a turn on/turn off? Are we dating the outfit? Or are we interested in the person (err, sim in this case)?

    Wow, I missed the walk-through. I'm hoping that the color of clothing has something to do with a Sims' favorite color. Would be nice to know this has some kind of bearing, after all and not just a personality quirk. LOL
