Help me understand Family Leave for work-at-home careers

I'm having trouble using Family Leave for the work-at-home careers and am trying to figure out if there's a bug going on or if I just don't understand the gameplay. I posted this on AHQ Game Issues ye...

@mightysprite Yes. I took it about 3 hours before their scheduled work start time. I think the popup actually happens about an hour before the start time, so I was taking the family leave option about 2 hours before that.
