How's a Sim in the dorms supposed to access Household Inventory?

I have a sim at University right now who has received something in the mail twice so far that didn't show up in the sim's personal inventory when I got the mail. I have to assume both times they were...

I agree. Why even have a mailbox? At least my Sim could license his music from there. But forget ever getting anything in the mail. It's almost there as part of a design I'm thinking. Totally frustrating. Perhaps that's why some of the dormies leave notes around?
