I'm really glad they didn't make them overrides. I want some of my sims to freelance and work from home, other times, I want my sim to have rabbit hold careers to go to.
I like more options, not overrides.
They could’ve just made the freelance option a part of the career. Like you know how for the City Living careers you can go to the rabbit hole or work from home with the special tasks? They could’ve done the same thing for the freelance bit. So if you chose work from home it would’ve switched to the things you can do from home.
It just seems weird to not choose the Painter career from the job category and instead choose the Freelance career and then chose Painter as one of the options. I think it will confuse people, especially those who haven’t seen the stream or will be new to the game.
I agree with this. The career structure/system seems less logical. I'd prefer there to be the Writer career with 3 paths; Journalist, Author or Freelance. Graphically they could share the same icon, too, but I guess we'll get a new career icon even if the sims will do the same (write). "Chazzzy;c-17031047" wrote:

That does make sense, I could get behind an option like that. But, I do like the daily tasks and skill requirements for the current tech guru, painter and writer careers, so as long as the go to work option stuck with that, it would have been okay.- SimmervilleSeasoned AceThinking a bit more, keep in mind that freelancing doesn't mean you are mostly free to do whatever you do and work only if you feel like it. Most Freelancers run their own company, they have lots of legal commitments, they often need to work more and harder, because it can be very hard finding work to do, and then in the start you won't make as much money as you need to make. You don't just write a text, but you will also have lots of administration. So - this too make freelancing very different from getting a 9-4 job, hired by others.
Some of my freelancers might even have a part of their house turned into a business office, like running a family company on ground floor and living on 2nd floor. Customers must be invited though, or I can just pretend that customer meetings are very rare. In the Artist bit I think we saw the freelancing sim chatting with the customer/client, so maybe it's all online these days :) - SimmervilleSeasoned Ace

All that might be true in RL, but this is supposed to be a fun Sims game, don't over complicate it with RL facts that don't apply here. It's fine as is. Let's wait until we actually get it in the game and play it before we begin dissecting it and tearing it apart. We're getting three new careers people for free. Be happy.
Oh, but I AM happy! This opens up for a new way of running local businesses in my game, I love that! :) - Eh, to me you're right. They could have added a third option as freelancer under the already existing artist, tech guru and writer branches. It would have the same purpose but be organized better. Things that would have made sense under freelancer that don't have existing branches would be photographer or carpenter (woodworking) for example. Potentially a baker where you don't want to run a store but sell directly, a gig to cook certain goods.
I wonder if they'll add more options under freelancer in the future or split it for a 3way branch in existing ones - If I've raised a Sim from childhood, they grow up with the 'responsible' trait and never have to do 'homework' for their jobs. (Or, usually not - sometimes, they have an assignment when they first start a career.) I don't like managing more than two Sims at a time, so I'd rather have one of the parents going off to the rabbit hole when I keep a couple together.
I think that where I will really use this is with my elders. They have usually completed all the aspirations I care to play, and have maxed out most of the their skills. My current elder (and mother of a teenager) spends her days painting, and it's getting rather boring. Her ancestors already painted masterpieces of all the paintings I want for the house (the cute cat picture and grilled cheese picture) and they have over 5M in the family bank. I don't want her to get a job because I want her to be home to help her teenage daughter with her school projects and homework. A freelance job would be perfect. (Sadly, Holly won't live to see the patch :'( .) "CaityTrina;c-17031632" wrote:

I honestly feel like most of the players are going to do freelancer now instead of the actual careers.
What they should have done is include other kinds of freelance work that are not art, programming, or writing. Like you said, photographer, carpenter, and baker would have been great. The photography and woodworking skills are very limited and kind of...useless. I dont think the sims team thought this through.- ValiantRedKnightNew Spectator

I don’t know about that. I’ll probably still use the regular careers for larger household.
It would be nice to have photography/woodworking versions later though. - Sigzy_29New Spectator

Whats the point of the painter, author, and tech guru careers if sims can work from home under those same job titles?
It does not make sense to me.

Truthfully we can already do freelancer work in the BG with all of those 3 skills. You can already have requests from people asking you to do things with the programming skill. To me it seems like work and time spent for nothing. They could have used that time and work to bring us something actually new and, therefore, more significant but ok.....Or, they could have, at least, made use of skills that aren't used as often, like handiness or photography.
I do like the new buy mode though. "Sigzy05;c-17032359" wrote:

I would have agreed with handiness. Correct me if I am wrong but we had no careers that go with it? Personally I dislike grinding for that skill, and always use the replace option.
