I think in live mode the sim is "brighter" because of the lighting.
Here's a pic of the same sim in both CAS and in-game on my computer. I don't really notice much loss of detail, the only thing I see is that she is brighter, which makes her skin lighter.

There are some differences-- the eyes are rounder, in general there are fewer sharp edges (like around the eyes and the cheekbones) in game. If I had to guess, I'd say the in-game character is a lower-polygon mesh than in CAS, but has some sort of automatic smoothing to round off the edges.
Also the two pictures are reversed? like one is a mirror image of the other? you can see it best in the hair and the necklace.
