Well my experience is a bit different. I have found that this pack has changed how I play at least somewhat. All I have been doing since it came out is to play with a poor family living off the grid in a shack on the beach. It has been so much fun, and quite different from playing in other neighbourhoods.
My sims have the bare minimum and have been growing or foraging for food, getting the odd job, and either finding or crafting things to sell using the table from JA. It has allowed me to take them all over the island and to experience its beauties. The new fish look great and I really enjoy the enhancements to the fishing and swimming skills. I use LittleMsSam’s snorkel anywhere mod and really love watching them snorkel both from above and using the 1st person camera mode. The underwater views are lovely and offer very detailed 3D perspectives, and you can often see the new fish or sea turtles swimming randomly about in them.
Playing off the grid in Sulani also allows for a more relaxed lifestyle for sims. They have no sources of fun so I am constantly finding them playing together in the sand or building sand sculptures and as a result their relationships are quite high without me doing anything much. The sociability of the locals (who immediately presented my family with a kava bowl) also means that they have been able to make friends easily and experience some of the island vibe.
I have only taken them to one festival (where they had a great time socializing and eating with some new neighbours); I haven’t tried conservation or diving or mermaids; nonetheless I have been thoroughly enjoying playing with this pack.
