I agree, it nearly turned me off playing this way at the start. I guess I've gotten used to it, but I wish there were more options available. Another challenge was the tense moodlet they'd get from using off-the-grid sinks and showers. My sim would always get very tense after dealing with his bladder and hygiene needs in the mornings, lol. One good thing about this is he never autonomously drinks water from the tap! And since he lives near the waterfall, sometimes I'd just let him shower there to avoid getting tense :)
