When the Stinky Fish symbol gets stuck, I found it to go away if you send your sim off to another lot and causing the loading screen. I had this happen to one of my mermaids (just once), she too was a mermaid and marine biologist. She is no longer in that career, I had another sim take over the job when she started her family.
