For me positive emotions are always overlapping negative ones. I can be friendly with a sim that my sim supposably doesn't like because is happy of being in a great environment, or is flirty for watching tv... evrything goes against the sim nature.
How do you manage to play fine with emotions?
For me it's a big problem that affects other things in game. If it was fixed I could find a way to enjoy TS4. I try to play rotative like in TS2 and doesn't work, try to play an individual family like in TS3 and it also doesn't work for me.
I don't know how to make TS4 enjoyable without mods.
Yeah, I actually do fine with emotions, despite the fact that I can see where people who criticize it are coming from. I'd definitely say it's on the lazy side.
For me, the keys are Sentiments and preferences.
If a Sim is hurt or has a festering grudge with another Sim, it takes *forever* to let up, and that Sim is often going to be Sad, Angry, or Tense around the Sim they're hurt by or have a grudge with. This can lead to all kinds of challenges if they're living together. I had a Toddler who was always upset around her mother because of some perceived slight (I think a rejected hug or something).
If you say "Yes" to every Like/Dislike suggestion, this can create some challenges, too. Say a Sim is Tense because they're around someone they have a negative Sentiment with. Anything they do that might get a Like/Dislike suggestion has a high chance of getting a Dislike suggestion. (This is also true if they're Uncomfortable, and possibly Sad.) I said Yes to a Sim disliking a type of musical genre--and she was *constantly* Tense or Uncomfortable when that genre was playing in the same room where she was doing something, even if she wasn't actively listening to it. This, of course, led to her disliking more things, such as Video Gaming. And since she was a Neat Sim, she was Uncomfortable when repairing a sink because of the mess, so this led to her disliking Handiness.
Because Likes/Dislikes are new, there's no rules regarding them for the 100 Baby Challenge, so I decided to mess with her preferences and make her like almost every genre of music instead. But of course, you don't have to do it, and you can easily make a Sim miserable by having them dislike a bunch of regular activities (like Cooking).
Now, whether or not you *should* have to go to all this trouble to make emotions more challenging for their Sims is a different question, and I understand if you would rather the game offered more challenge by default. I just thought I'd share my experience.
ETA: I forgot to mention--when a Sim has a negative moodlet from being around someone they have a negative Sentiment with, their Happy moodlets fade quicker! This is helpful if you get a lot of positive moodlets from things like decorations or using upgraded items. Also, I believe the "nicely decorated" buffs have been nerfed. They don't last forever just because the Sim is in the room now.
