That is a more traditional American-style Barn. (I should know, I live in Ohio!) If you want to see how they fully function, I would watch one of the many Let's Plays out there. James Turner's is my favorite. Also DeeSims. They both actually interact with the farm stuff a lot more than others and they are interacting post-release so you might be able to glean more information that way.
