I've noticed that my sims only like purchased gifts too. Even if it's a floral item, like a rose. They hate the one the giver grew in their garden, yet like the one the giver purchased to give to them. It's ridiculous. Perhaps only certain sims should have a preference for purchased gifts, like those with a materialistic trait or something.
