Your best tips on historic gameplay

I'm playing a historic save for the first time, and in some ways it's easy, in others it's a steep learning curve. Things like figuring out how fast time should move, how to deal with the changes of decades (and fashion), how to get your sims to stay off their phones or not get bored when there are no computers around... there are lots of considerations, and we are probably very different when it comes to what we can accept and what breaks immersion for us.

So here is a thread of tips. What have you learnt when playing historically that you wish you'd known for a start?

Here are mine:

MCCC save outfits category
For me one of the most annoying things with historic gameplay has been dealing with all the townies generated in non-time specific clothing. There you are on a date in the park in the year 1891, and suddenly someone walks up to you in a mini-skirt and tank top! I have to admit I spent hours redressing (or deleting) townies, and as time changes, fashion does too and then I was redressing all the townies manually. It took forever.

What I just discovered (and that everyone else probably already know), is that if you are willing to play with mods, there is a setting in MCCC that will do this for you automatically. By clicking a sim in an outfit you like, you can go to dresser - outfit commands - save outfit. On a computer you can then set the game to force all new townies (and if you want, everyone aging up), to dress in those saved outfits. The more outfits saved, the more variation in game. I have to admit setting it up (if you care for variation) is a bit tedious, and it does nothing for hairstyles, but it's still less work and less annoyance because now all my townies show up in appropriate 1920s outfits. This is by far the most impactful mod when it comes to immersion for me.

No autonomous phone-mods
Another immersion breaking thing, as far as I am concerned, is how often sims will pick up their phone. Especially in times when phones did not exist. Having a mod to get rid of this is for me essential. I use the one from Bienchen83 but I am sure there are others.

Websites of styles and blueprint
I found some really good places online that has real actual blueprints from different time periods, which helps when building and decorating houses. For me having something real to base a house on helps so much with getting it right.

@JAL I have yet to play a strictly historical save but I would recommend you watch MiraRae_ on twitch or MiraRae on youtube. She only plays historical sims and she is quite good at it. If you watch her during her live streams she will answer questions, if you have any.
She has brought up in the past there is nothing to yet to stop the when needing to travel, to use the phone, and asked if anyone knew of any yet.

I found with the release of horse ranch, it's is just perfect for this issue. You get on your horse, and you say travel with, to or somethign from the dropdown, can't quite recall since I haven't used the pack in a few months. Basically take the horse to the location , and when loaded on the lot, you're on the horse, as if he really took you there.

Also can walk to other places near by and then click on visit residence or lot.
As for that always obsessed with your phone update we got with high school years, there is a mod for that, but I forgot who make it because it never worked with my system. Quick google search just now had be find :
Lazarusinashes No Constant Phone - which I may give a try because it looks like a new one and that issue annoys me as well.

As for electronics, on a lot of the historical homes, I have no tv or electronic and if you just have books all around, they will natually turn to reading when bored to enjoy themselves.

I was going to mention MC Command Center for edit sims in cas function but recently @Caerfinon mentioned to me on a similar topic, the MC Command Center Dresser was how to do that efficiently. I will have to give that a try. He also recommended The Fashion Authority Mod, which I have yet to, but been meaning to try.

There was a book I put on reserve from the Library, which was a catalog used for Victorian architecture in that time period of America. I totally forgot about it and when I find the name I will post it here to you. Will take me some digging but I wanted it completely for this very same purpose.

Victorian Architectural Details, this is book. It was a catalog book made in the Victorian era.

But there are so many reference materials online for free. Also there is blueprints.com.
Videos and walk through on youtube are highly helpful. Kate Emerald, a sims 4 youtuber, recommends if you want to make a recreation of a real building, find someone online who has already modeled it in 3d is highly helpful and will save you a lot of time and heartache than trying to make it from pictures or plans.

Please share photos of your builds and gameplay. I love historical gameplay.
  • @LeucosiaX Thank you for that link! I used this one from 1901 for the first build I did for the eldest son of the family: https://forums.thesims.com/en_us/home/leaving?allowTrusted=1&target=https%3A%2F%2Farchive.org%2Fdetails%2Fmoderndwellingsb00geof%2Fpage%2Fn5%2Fmode%2F2up

And then this one for the house I built for their younger daughter who built her house in 1923: https://www.antiquehomestyle.com/plans/sears/1923sears/23sears-americus.htm

Both houses are showcased in my Whittaker Saga thread, the first one on page 3 (ca middle of the page) and the second on page 7 (Josephine gets her house, her baby and a funeral)
  • As for missing the computer, I once had a loom that doubled as a computer. LOL At one point I also had a large open book that functioned as a computer. Can I find them again? So far. no. Mostly I just shrug my way through the 18th century.

Thank you for this source online. @JAL
These houses are all absolutely charming- I do love this one from 1923!
This is a great thread! I'm am now following. Thanks for sharing.

You probably know this site, but I will share just in case because there is so much great content here:https://historicalsimslife.blogspot.com/

I have a victorian house I built based on the real house they filmed the vampire movie Only Lovers Left Alive. There were no floor plans so I had to just go from photos. Huge interior design issue when using round walls in the sims. I guess you can all it a work in progress. Here I made a video of it.

@GalacticGal This one, by chance? I use this computer disguised as a herbology/astronomy tome in my 1760s save:

Before they had the book, my sims had prematurely invented the sewing machine (functions as a computer, too: https://modthesims.info/d/623802/sims2-freetime-sewing-for-sims4.html)

As for tips, I second @amjoie - be flexible and don't stress over details. I found it helpful to read up a lot about customs, both for holidays and everyday life, and historical evens. As long as you're really immersed in what your sims are doing, slight mistakes in the visuals might matter less.

Something that can go a long way is to (temporarily) introduce historical persons to the game. I don't do that, personally, but that photo of grandpa having met might become a family heirloom and one day save the family from poverty.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for linking to that sewing machine. Can't wait to try it out tonight. I realize it's just a table, but it's nice to SEE.
