Custom Careers: is there something I'm missing?

(This is a repost of a thread I posted over at MTS, but I'd really appreciate some SimGuru advice, or advice from anyone else who doesn't use ModTheSims)

Hi all, I've decided to take a crack at making a custom career, because apparently I'm a massive masochist, and haven't seen custom careers done before (so, good luck getting any help, eh?)

Anyhoo, I've managed to clone the Tech Guru career and all its associated files (as far as I know), and I've adjusted the text in a couple of XML files (which show up completely blank in S4PE, for some reason), and when I get it package-ified and in-game, none of my adjustments seem to actually work, and all I end up with is a duplicate of the Tech Guru (my new career should be called "Medical", with a description to match: neither change is showing up).

Has anyone else attempted this before? And if so, do they have any words of wisdom to share?

I've included a screenshot as an example, as well as the package itself at ModTheSims (found here: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=4639584&posted=1#post4639584), for anybody who feels like tinkering with what I've done, or who happens to see any glaring mistakes (I am new to Sims 4 modding after all, what I couldn't do for a G.E.C.K or Creation Kit right about now...)

  • Oh yes, that reminds me of something I was curious about - do the Sims developers have a package editor to use? Or is all development bundled into packages by some automated process that can't be reversed?
  • We do have package explorer, although we usually debug loose files.

I usually ask for the XML to be posted because it's easier to debug without running the game.

Do you mind providing your raw XML as opposed to a package file? Thanks!

Sure thing. At the moment all I really have are the cloned Tech Guru files and some basic strings, so it's not like I've really gotten all that far. But if you want to take a crack at it, be my guest. :)
