@ongoingwhy Sounds like the game just froze because of this: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/NEEDS-SAVES-Game-freezes-occasionally-when-opening-in-game-menus/m-p/11399190#M211059 and when you exited the game was in a half-corrupted state.
Since it only happened once, I guess it's not worth sending your save game as asked in that thread but maybe if you have a backup and can repro again, it would be helpful.
