Help! Since yesterday there's this error message appearing "Unable to start. The Sims 4 is already running", which is not true. The game is nowhere running which I can see through Activity Monitor. I've been trying everything, even switching to a different Apple account but it still didn't work. Even uninstalling every little file of Origin and Sims on my computer did not do the job. Please help ☹️ I've lost all hope of playing...
"What I found is that my Sims folder has a "UserData.lock" file in it that, for some reason, causes this problem. To get passed it on my machine I deleted the lock file from "~/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/".
Try using Finder to go to your Documents -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 4 folder and rename/delete/move UserData.log, then try relaunching. If you prefer the command line then open Terminal and try:
rm -rf "~/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/UserData.lock"
Then try to launch the game again."

i got the sims 4 this december on macbook air 2020 (macOS Big Sur) and it worked fine until now, when i open the game it says that the game is already running. i've followed the advices above, i resetted the game, reinstalled, updated and repaired but it didn't work so i deleted the file userdata.lock and the game works BUT DOESN'T SAVE the pregress. so everytime i have to create a sim and build an home and it wont save. please help!

This makes my game run, but I cannot load my saved games.

@ventrap This worked for me. I just moved the userdata.lock file to my desktop and it opened. Still very slow however and all my saved games are gone... :/

Hi quick question did you buy the sims game or did you download it for free?
- 6 years ago@ventrap I renamed my UserData file and now the game runs, but it won't save. It gives error code 0. Is this connected or a separate issue and what's the fix for it?

Hi, i did the same thing(deleting de UserData.lock) then I could play the sims. But I could not save the game. What should I do?

This worked for me!!! I had tried everything from doing a repair on Origin to uninstalling and reinstalling Sims 4 and nothing worked. I even took out my save files and mod files to no avail. Taking out the UserData lock worked and Sims 4 booted up immediately after!

- 6 years ago@lilisz9501 I am not sure.. It took me hours to find an option that finally worked that by the time I got it running I needed to get some sleep. I'll play it here in a few and see how that works and will let you know.

When you did this, did it completely erase your data? I removed the UserData.lock file and started the game. It worked, but my save games were all completely gone and TS4 asked me if I wanted a tutorial, as if I had never played on there before.
Soooo at this point it's either never play or start over...is anyone else having this??
Edit: I tried the instructions in the post above (at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8IhBBJNfJM) and it solved it! 🙂
- simmyfroggy6 years agoSeasoned AceSo I managed 4 days (well, 3 technically because I didn't play yesterday) to go with the game not bugging daily.
Only copied over my saves and that works, so I wonder if there's an issue with the Tray too that was causing the bug daily.
However, Catalina has a new update so I was back to square one this morning. Still waiting for a permanent fix as changing the settings every time is becoming tedious.

Hi I just wanted to clarify on your soultion that i need to move and rename the UserData.lock to UserData.log right?
