Unable to start: The Sims 4 is already running - Mac only

If you're experiencing this error message it doesn't mean your game is already running, the actual message itself is incorrect. It means The Sims 4 cannot access the Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 fold...

Please post a screenshot from System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders showing the access the game has.

The Sims 4 should be there. Go into Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and if the game is not in the list click the + in the lower left corner of the list and add it.

  @Bluebellflora I'm not seeing a Sims 4 option when I try to add it. I was playing it a few days ago and I downloaded Sims 3 on the disk as well and that's when it stopped working I believe.

    You have to add it by clicking on the + icon.
