Crashing With Lots

Every so often I set up a new 'base save' with all my favourite community/residential lots transferred from game saves I have played. And every time I do this I have frequent crashing problems. It can happen when I am loading a lot or when I am saving a lot or when I am placing a lot. There is no pattern to it other than the fact I am going into a number of lots one after another.

So today, for instance, I went into an old save and loaded a community lot, saved it to my library ready to transfer, loaded another lot, saved that one to my library, tried to load another lot and - bam - CTD. A bit later I had loaded a few lots in the same way and it was going well, tried to save one to my library - bam - CTD. Etc etc. Sometimes it will happen with a lot and I can go back to that same lot later and it doesn't happen. It's not a new thing, it happens every time I set up a new game save. It's like the game will only let me transfer a couple of lots before crashing and then I have to start the game back up before I can carry on.

If anyone has any ideas, it will be greatly appreciated xx

PS. I have no cc or mods whatsoever.

  • elliebreton  It's possible some of your lots are the problem here.  Does this happen if you save a pile of EA-made lots, unedited, and place them in a new save?  If you don't want to clutter up your Tray folder with lots you'd never otherwise use, move the Tray folder elsewhere and let the game create a new one.  You can delete that new one when you're done testing and restore the old copy.

  • elliebreton  It's possible that the lots are the problem, or part of it, but that they don't cause a crash every time, due to slightly different contexts (e.g. whether you go into live mode right away after placing a lot).  It would be unusual, however, for precisely the same steps to generate different outcomes, as with the vet clinic that causes a crash when saving sometimes but not others.  That's what I wasn't sure about from your OP.  It could still happen, but if it's happening a lot, I agree it's probably not only about the builds, at least.

The problem here is, I don't see anything that would explain the issue.  Your dxdiag is full of Sims 4 errors, but they're more like the result of the underlying issue, not the cause, and they're generic enough to not be particularly informative.  The errors basically look like you did something and the game reacted badly > error > crash.

If you'd like to experiment, at least to make sure this isn't a system issue, try playing in a clean boot, with your computer completely offline.

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

You can sign into the EA App and put it in offline mode, then disable wifi and/or disconnect the ethernet cable before pressing Play.  This will cut off your access to the Gallery, of course, but the game itself should play as normal.

Repeat your usual process and see what happens.  As noted, you can temporarily remove the Tray folder if you don't want to create a bunch of duplicate Library items, then restore the folder later.

Thanks so much for your reply.

If it was down to specific lots, wouldn't it always happen with those though? I can have a crash when on a particular lot but then next time I'm loading that lot it won't crash. Eg. today I tried to save a vet clinic into my library and the game crashed to desktop. I loaded the game up again and went back to that same vet clinic and saved it into my library with no problem. Then a couple of lots later I was trying to place a wedding venue into my save - crash to desktop. Reloaded the game, went back to the same location, placed that same wedding venue with no crash. Then a bit of time later I get a crash with a different lot. Reload, rinse and repeat.

  • Thank you for the time you gave to me on this puzzlezaddict - having run through all your suggestions, I can only assume that it actually is the lots causing the issues - though why they sometimes crash and sometimes don't I have no idea. The clean boot itself didn't seem to make any difference but I didn't get any crashes at all with EA made lots, in or out of the clean boot - so I guess you were right the first time.
